Tying the knot

When I got engaged, the first place I went to research a wedding was theknot.com. It’s the place almost all brides go. They get 3.2 million unique visitors a month to their website. How did they become so huge? Started in 1996, they were one of the first wedding sites to get online. Additionally, the wife and husband cofounders, Carley Roney and David Liu, received seed financing from America Online, then from QVC and Hummer Winblad Adventure Partners. Interestingly, for her own wedding, Carley was an “alternabride” – wore a vintage minidress and booked her own venue right before the wedding, then began the knot three years later. Today, theknot.com is almost a $100 million firm with 200 message boards, two magazines, and 500 employees.
