Men find niche in wedding and daddy businesses

It’s interesting to see men getting into businesses primarily dominated by women. Two that come to mind are the wedding industry and the parenting industry. Some men are now stepping up to the plate and coming up with their own businesses related to these big life events.

Groomsonline.com was started in 1999 by Mark Walerstein. He had worked as a DJ for eighteen years, when he realized there were no websites catering to grooms. He decided to act on his idea, built the website, and within three years had over 60,000 visitors a month. The website features wedding checklists, groom attire advice, honeymoon planning, bachelor party advice, a grooms forum, and lots of other stuff. In 2000, Mark included another site groomsonlinegifts.com into the website as well, which offers ideas for wedding party gifts for groomsmen.

Another website, Diaperdude.com, offers parenting advice for dads, as well as the best cool diaper bags for dads. I love their tagline “It’s not just a bag – it’s a movement”. The company was started with Chris Pegula became a father in 2003. He noticed the diaper bags on the market mainly catered to moms, and realized there are lots of dads out there too, and they don’t want to be carrying around frilly diaper bags. Chris designed a dad bag, and it became an immediate hit with other dads. The bags are sold online and at Nordstroms and Fred Segal. Chris has been featured in tons of magazines as well.
